Algorithms for Continuous - Discrete Process Simulation

Many of the operations in the process industries are examples of discrete-event dynamic systems. Simulation of automation manufacturing systems, batch processes, start-up and shutdown procedures fall under such categories. The dynamics of these systems are characterized by the continuous process behavior intersected by discrete discontinuities. Such systems are usually described by differential equations, which change when a discontinuity occurs. Hybrid systems require special integration routines, which are not available in the conventional integration methods. This paper discusses a new algorithm for modeling continuous-discrete dynamic processes. The main target of this new approach is increased performance without loss of rigor. The authors anticipate the significance of high speed in the advent of new challenges in optimal control and dynamic optimization.
